Strong families and strong values mean a strong America. When families struggle, when Washington loses touch with the values that have sustained us across generations, America loses its way.
For starters, America must have a culture of life. Our country will be judged by how we treat the most vulnerable members of our society – the disabled, the elderly, and the very ill, as well as the unborn. Too many of our leaders are reluctant to stand up for the rights of the unborn and other vulnerable citizens, despite strong public support for offering them greater protection.
Recently, the nation’s conscience has been shocked by a series of undercover videos showing the horrific nature of what Planned Parenthood really does. They’re not a “women’s health” organization – they don’t provide mammograms. They’re in the business of late-term abortion and harvesting fetal organs and tissue for resale.
This has brought greater scrutiny to two very serious issues pro-life issues facing America:
- Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
The post-22 week (the point when unborn children feel pain) abortion ban is a common sense step we can take. A recent survey found that 64% of Americans, including 63% of women and 63% of independents support such legislation.
- Defunding Planned Parenthood
The nation’s largest abortion provider, major pro-life organizations and their allies in Congress have worked to defund Planned Parenthood, which received $542 million in FY 2012. The House twice voted to do so in 2011. Non-abortion related services represent a very small and decreasing percentage of PP’s $1.2 billion in revenues. For example, in 2010, the organization made 2,300 adoption referrals while performing 334,000 abortions. While the federal government technically funds “family planning services,” money is fungible.
In the weeks and months ahead, these will be front-burner issues before Congress. At CSP, we will do everything we can to educate the public, heighten awareness, and hold Washington accountable.
